What is Lokta Paper
A Living Himalayan Craft, Pressed Sheet by Sheet
Handmade Lokta paper is produced from the inner bark of the Lokta shrub (Daphne bholua and Daphne papyracea), a wild plant native to the high-altitude forests of Nepal. The bark is steamed, hand-beaten into pulp, and individually formed into sheets on bamboo frames — a process unchanged for centuries and still practiced by Buddhist monasteries and rural communities across the Himalayas.
Unlike machine-made paper, every sheet of handmade Lokta paper carries its own texture, fiber pattern, and natural variation. It is naturally insect- and moisture-resistant, acid-free, and can last for centuries — which is why it has historically been used for sacred Buddhist scriptures and government archives in Nepal and Tibet.
At Tibetan Handicraft & Paper, we work directly with artisan cooperatives in Dolakha and the surrounding hills to produce handmade Lokta paper and finished Lokta paper products for stationers, designers, and wholesale buyers worldwide.
